Resolution on Support for Natural Marriage

Resolution on Support for Natural Marriage adopted by the 125th Supreme Convention on Aug. 9, 2007.

WHEREAS, marriage is a natural institution that has been understood throughout human history to consist of one man and one woman united in a life-long and exclusive bond; and

WHEREAS, marriage between a man and a woman is the cornerstone of human society and provides the most favorable and natural environment in which to protect the rights and the best interests of children; and

WHEREAS, Pope Benedict XVI reminded us in July 2007 that if we listen to human nature we realize that we are naturally inclined to a lifetime of faithfulness in marriage; and

WHEREAS, the institution of marriage is being seriously undermined by legislatures and courts that seek to give the legal status of “marriage” to arrangements between persons of the same sex;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we will never waver in our efforts to defend the natural institution of marriage as the exclusive union of one man and one woman; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, that we oppose all attempts to give the legal status of marriage to arrangements between persons of the same sex; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, that we join with the bishops of the United States, Canada and throughout the world in their efforts to achieve legal and constitutional protection at the national, state, territorial or local levels for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.
