Knights Offer Prayers for World Peace

October Military Council Newsletter

Knights from in and around Flagler Beach, Fla., stand at attention during a Sept. 11 memorial service at the Flagler Beach Pier. Fourth Degree Knights led a color guard that included veterans, first responders and other civic groups. The wreath-laying ceremony at the pier was followed by a procession, a Blue Mass and lunch. More than 300 people attended the event.

At the 126th Supreme Convention, held last August in Quebec City, Que., the Supreme Council honored Knights who were killed in action during the 2007-08.

Since 2002, the Knights of Columbus has recognized Sept. 11 as a World Day of Prayer for Peace.

In memory of the tragic terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon, Knights and their families are encouraged to pray for an end to conflict around the world and for the first responders and military personnel who serve our country and protect our communities.

Many K of C units found their own way to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11.

Berkshire Council 1520 in North Canaan, Conn., hosted an all-day event at its parish that included a rosary for world peace, a Mass, a memorial service and dinner.

Tony Huffman of Raul G. Navarrete Council 9482 in Chandler, Ariz., created a 1/4-scale replica of the iron cross that was displayed at ground zero following the attacks.

The cross was placed on the altar at all Masses during the week of Sept. 11. And St. Philip the Apostle Council 9884 in Lewisville, Texas, hosted an  appreciation luncheon in honor of the Lewisville Fire Department and all area first responders.

In addition to an array of Blue Masses and memorial services, some Knights hosted blood drives in support of the hospitals and medical technicians who work to save lives every day. St. Isaac Jogues Council 11312 in Lincoln, Neb., held a memorial blood drive in collaboration with the American Red Cross.

Additionally, Our Lady, Queen of Peace Council 4556 in Imlay City, Mich., participated in a statewide blood drive at the Michigan International Speedway. All donors received a free lunch and a tour of the stadium.

Members of Walter Pollard Council 5480 in Newport News, Va., and
their families traveled to New Haven, Conn., Sept. 11 to visit the Knights of Columbus Museum and attend Mass at St. Mary’s Church, where the Order was founded in 1882. The Mass was offered in memory of the victims of Sept. 11, their families and all first responders.
