St. Joseph Church in Winchester, Ky., had a steep goal for itself: to raise $150,000 in 12 months in order to build a new steeple for their suburban Lexington church. Msgr. Danz Council 2459 of the Knights of Columbus was up to the challenge. The Knights devised a contest a steeple chase to challenge parishioners to raise the needed funds.
Using the theme This is our church, this is our steeple. Help us rebuild before it falls on the people! the council hosted a serious of fund raising projects from a traditional fish fry and auctions to a black tie gala and a Shopping for Shingles campaign that encouraged other Kentucky councils to buy roofing shingles for the project at $20 apiece. At the conclusion of the year, the $150,000 goal was met, with the Knights having contributed $30,000.
For its dedicated efforts in raising funds, which totaled nearly 600 man-hours, as well as for its leadership and inspirational steeple chase campaign, Msgr. Danz Council 2459 was awarded the Knights of Columbus International Church Activity Award at the 124th annual Supreme Council meeting in Orlando, Fla. Aug. 2, 2006. Grand Knight and Mrs. Jim Barlow accepted the award, along with Kentucky State Deputy and Mrs. Dannie Harris and Past State Deputy and Mrs. Gerald Roof.
