DALLAS A statue of the Virgin Mary that travels between homes in San Pedro, Luzon, is helping keep the Knights of Kawanggawa Council 9189 united. The Knights gather weekly for a prayer service in the home of a member hosting the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. During the home visits, the Knights can see what needs the family might have and set up programs to address them. The visits also ensure that members and their families deepen bonds that unite them as Catholics and Knights. This past year, in honor of the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's pontificate, the Knights enhanced the program by adding a Divine Mercy prayer service.
This program earned the members of Council 9189 the top Council Activity Award from the international Knights of Columbus at its annual meeting in Dallas, Aug. 4. Ramon Miquiabas, grand knight of Council 9189, accepted the award on behalf of his council.
There are nearly 100,000 Knights in Luzon. In 2003 they reported raising more than $1.2 million for charity and volunteering more than 4.5 million hours of service.
