Birthright Facility Welcomed in Community

DALLAS — Dozens of women in Sidney, N.Y., have a local Catholic family organization to thank for helping them bring their pregnancies to term in a safe, sheltering environment. The Knights of Columbus of Sacred Heart Council 4937 in Sidney spearheaded the start of a Birthright-affiliated crisis pregnancy home in 2001 and continue to provide major support for its operations. At least 14 women have brought their babies to term thanks to Birthright and the Knights, and dozens more have sought support. Each new mother and baby is presented with a layette.

The Knights' efforts earned them the top Community Activity Award from the international Knights of Columbus. Joseph Maggio, grand knight of the Sidney Knights, accepted the award on behalf of the members of his council at the Knights' convention in Dallas, Aug. 4.

Sidney Knights have volunteered thousands of hours to the Birthright home and enlisted help from other churches. One Knight donated a building for the center, others furniture, equipment and money. Four Knights sit on board of the Birthright home and others help with maintenance.

Statewide there are more than 102,000 Knights. In 2003, they raised and donated to charity nearly $4 million and volunteered 1.8 million hours of service.
