Two-month-old Taylor Ziemba has a new lease on life thanks to the Knights of Columbus in Harrison Township, Mich. Taylor was born with a rare intestinal disease that required experimental and costly transplant surgery. When the members of St. Hubert's Council 11658 learned of her condition and the family's medical and transportation costs to the hospital in Pittsburgh where she was being treated, they undertook a fund-raising drive on their behalf. In two months, the Knights spearheaded community fund drives that raised more than $40,000. At one event, an organ transplant recipient spoke on the critical need for organ donors. Taylor received her much-needed surgery in early June.
The members of St. Hubert's Council 11658 received the Knights of Columbus international Family Activity Award for its "Charity Quest 2004" program. Alain Beliveau, grand knight of Council 11658, accepted the award on behalf of his council at the Knights' international meeting in Dallas, Aug. 4.
There are nearly 70,000 Knights in Michigan. In 2003 they reported raising $4.8 million for charity and volunteering 2.1 million hours of service.
