Three Catholic journalists were honored by the Knights of Columbus for excellence in reporting on volunteerism and community service. The Father Michael J. McGivney Awards for Journalistic Excellence on Volunteerism were presented at the Catholic Media Convention in Brooklyn, N.Y., May 25.

The first-place award was given to Jimmy Patterson of The Angelus (Diocese of San Angelo, Texas) for his article, “Love Thy Neighbor: Big Bend residents give helping hand to Mexicans kept from livelihoods after border closure.” The award includes $250 for the author and $250 for the charity of the author’s choice.

Second- and third-place awards were presented, respectively, to Maryangela Layman Román of The Catholic Herald (Archdiocese of Milwaukee) for her article, “Woodworker’s Talents: A Gift to Blessed Sacrament Students,” and to Jennifer Willems of The Catholic Post (Diocese of Peoria, Ill.) for her article, “ ‘Never Felt Such Love’: Catholic Charities Team in New Orleans.”

This year’s award-winning articles were chosen from among 94 stories submitted to the Knights of Columbus by 46 member-publications of the Catholic Press Association. The awards were presented by Tim Hickey, editor of the Knights of Columbus flagship publication, Columbia magazine.
