The Knights of Columbus has asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse a decision by a federal court in that declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because it contains the words "under God."

4/11/2006 Reform Should Provide Avenue to Legal Residency and Citizenship
At its quarterly meeting in Charleston, S.C., April 7-9, the Knights of Columbus Board of Directors adopted a resolution calling upon the president and U.S. Congress to "agree upon immigration legislation that not only gains control over the process of immigration, but also rejects any effort to criminalize those who provide humanitarian assistance to undocumented immigrants, and provides these immigrants an avenue by which they can emerge from the shadows of society and seek legal residency and citizenship in the U.S."

4/4/2006 Knights Work with Bishops to Defend Marriage
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Knights are joining forces in a campaign to encourage U.S. Catholics to write their senators urging a vote in favor of the Marriage Protection Amendment. The Order is printing 10 million post cards urging senators to support the amendment. They will vote on it in June.

1/23/2006 Alito Nomination Approved by Judiciary Committee
On a 10-8 party-line vote on Jan. 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U. S. Supreme Court. The Knights of Columbus endorsed his nomination. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson earlier sent a letter to every senator asking that they reject anti-Catholic prejudice when considering his nomination.

In a letter to each member of the U.S. Senate, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson asked senators to disavow any effort to decide Judge Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court on the basis of his faith, or the degree to which he is presumed to be a faithful Catholic.

"The notion that Judge [Samuel] Alito should be considered unfit for membership on the Supreme Court simply because he is a Catholic (or because he is one Catholic too many) is profoundly in conflict with the letter and the spirit of the Constitution." Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said in a Nov. 8, 2005, letter to U.S. Senators. "To reject his nomination on these grounds would be to impose a religious test for public office."
