Connecticut Legislators Vote Religious Liberty Protection in Same-Sex Marriage Bill

After an intense two-week effort by the Knights of Columbus and other organizations, the Connecticut legislature adopted a religious liberty amendment to Bill 899, which implements last years state Supreme Court decision that imposes same-sex marriage in the state. The amended measure was then passed by both houses of the legislature on April 22. |

Only a week after introducing, then pulling, a bill to strip Catholic bishops of administrative authority over their church, the co-chairmen of the Connecticut legislatures Judiciary Committee offered a measure to legalize assisted suicide in the state. The Connecticut legislation that proposed to strip administrative authority from Catholic priests and bishops has clearly woken a sleeping giant the states Catholic population. Bishops from the states three dioceses, along with other speakers, including Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, addressed a crowd of more than 5,000 Catholics and others concerned for religious freedom. |

More than 5,000 Catholics attended a rally for religious freedom at the State Capitol in Hartford today. The rally, which featured the state's bishops and Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, came a day after a bill that would strip Connecticut Catholic bishops and priests of their administrative powers was abruptly withdrawn by its legislative sponsors. |

A newly released survey of California voters shows Proposition 4, a proposed law that would require a waiting period and parental notification before a girl under 18 was allowed to have an abortion - has a 19 percentage point lead among likely voters, 52% to 33%. The poll was conducted for the Knights of Columbus by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion between September 28 and October 5, 2008. |
