Pro-Life Now a Separate Service Program Category
Effective this 2009-10 fraternal year, rather than report “Pro-Life” activities under the “Community” category, you will report them under the newly created “Pro-Life” category. If you use either the State Service Program Awards (#STSP) entry form or the Columbian Award (#SP7 ) application from the Council Report Forms booklet (#1436), you will need to make a couple of simple modifications. In reporting your council’s best Pro-Life program to your state council, write “Pro-Life” in the area at the top of the form where the other categories are listed. On the Columbian Award application, attach a separate sheet of paper listing your four reported programs in the “Pro-Life” category. Electronic versions of these forms are currently being updated, and we will advise you when the new versions have been posted to the Web site at www.kofc.org/forms.

Knights of Columbus Essay Contest
As Knights, it is our obligation to fight for the Church; it is of paramount importance to strengthen the foundation of Catholic principles and teachings in the hearts and minds of the youth. The Order has expanded the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest to all Catholic students — in public, private or parochial schools — in grades 8,9,10,11 and 12 during the current school year. The contest has also been expanded to go through the different levels of competition to the international level. The Order encourages all councils and assemblies to sponsor the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest at schools in their communities. The essay contest is a creative way to encourage young people to become citizens who are firmly grounded in the Faith.

CIS—On the Move
Catholic Information Service has always provided you with handy, reliable—and attractively packaged—resources to help you and your loved ones grow in the knowledge and practice of our Catholic faith. Beginning in January 2009, however, you will notice a slight change at CIS. Due to the rising cost of paper, production and postage, we must change our pricing structure. The last time we did so was over a decade ago. While still drastically below the actual cost of producing our high quality resources, and still offering discounts for bulk purchases, CIS must increase its fees. The new prices are: 1-99 booklets--$1.00 each; 100-200 booklets--.90 each; 201-500--.80 each; over 500--.75 each. Of course, our resources are always available for no charge in a variety of electronic formats at www.kofc.org/cis. For imformation please contact the Catholic Information Service.

The centerpiece of the initiative is an interactive Web site, www.fathersforgood.org. The theme for the launch of the Web site is “A Father’s Identity,” which offers men resources on how to build a strong, loving and confident identity in a culture that often does not value fatherhood or masculine virtues. The Web site also offers sections on male spirituality and building a better relationship with God, topics that are often overlooked on other male-oriented sites.

Training Success as a Grand Knight The grand knight is the highest ranking elected officer of his council. When he is successful in completing the duties of this office, his council will move forward and thrive. Retaining Members Important to Council Health
The growth of the Knights of Columbus depends not only on recruiting new members, but also on retaining current ones. These retention efforts for new members begin once he joins the Order. In addition efforts must be made to retain current members and to keep them enthusiastic about the Order. Use the link above to access information on starting your council's membership retention efforts.

Recruitment Strategies for Success
Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well-being of your council and the Order. Offering a man membership in the Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his own life and his community. Membership allows him to experience the fraternal bond that Knights share while growing closer to his family and his faith. For your council's recruiting efforts to succeed, you need to devise a plan of action and follow through on it. Use the above link to access ideas and materials to help your recruitment efforts, to keep our Order growing and strong, and to give every qualified man the opportunity to become a Knight of Columbus.

Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge
The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge, is designed for players to demonstrate the most basic of soccer skills — the penalty kick. The Soccer Challenge is open to all boys and girls in your community, ages 10-14. The contest will take place on the council, district, regional, state, and international levels.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is a great way to provide entertainment and enjoyment for the young people in your community. To sponsor a competition, all your council needs is the Free Throw Championship Kit, a couple of basketballs, a hoop and a bunch of kids. It is a great way to get out into the public and introduce the Order to your community — while providing youths with a rewarding activity that yields a chance for local, state or provincial, and international recognition.

Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest
Each year, councils throughout our Order participate in the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest to help make young people in their communities aware of the dangers of the abuse of drugs and alcohol, to give a positive outlook for children to embrace, and to help carry them through the peer pressure to use alcohol and drugs. The posters’ thought-provoking visuals and slogans send the message that drugs and alcohol are not the way to go.
