Knights of Columbus: Local Council Template

INSTRUCTIONS

The following information describes how to get the template files from our server to your computer, and then up on a different server with the least possible difficulty.

These instructions include specific references to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, the two major web browsers. These will be referred to as IE and NN, respectively.

Please read the instructions on the previous web page before proceeding.

1. Whether you download all the files individually or in the ZIP file, they must be placed in a single folder on your hard drive. For example: c:\template

2. If you downloaded the ZIP file, you must unzip the individual files into the folder in question before proceeding. To do this, use a program such as WinZip®, available for download online (www.winzip.com).

If you have already performed the above, you are ready to proceed.

3. Open your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer of Netscape Navigator), and open the File Menu in the upper left-hand corner. Then select "Open" (IE) or "Open Page" (NN). A box will pop up. In this box, select either "Browse" (IE) or "Choose File" (NN), and then proceed to locate the file "index.htm" in the folder in which you saved all of the template files. When you have selected "index.htm", click "Open" to view the file in your web browser.

Now that you have seen the template and made sure that it runs properly on your computer, you can set about customizing the information for your particular council.

1. To do this, open the "index.html" file in a text editor such as "NotePad" in Windows. Any word processor program will do, but make sure that you save the file with an ".htm" extension, as plain text, whenever you want to record your changes.

2. If you are unfamiliar with web programming, you might want someone to assist you with the editing of the pages, to avoid confusion. Chances are, someone in your council is at least slightly familiar with it. But if not, don't worry. The pages include directions in the text that should set you on the right path. Brackets, exclamation points, and hyphens mark these directions.
