Knights of Columbus: Local Council Template

HOW TO GET THE SITE ON THE NET

The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus does not at this time offer hosting services or provide technical support to local council web sites.

You may already have a small but sufficient amount of free web space from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) because of the Internet access account that you hold with them. If not, you may purchase some from them for a small fee, or shop around and see who seems to provide the best service.

To put a web site on the World Wide Web, you need an ISP to host your web site. This might be a local ISP which provides Internet access in your area and will rent you space for a web site for small fee, say $15 to $25 per month, or it may be personal (and often free) web site space on America Online or some other national service. Once you have an arrangement with an ISP to host your site, the ISP will give you instructions informing you how to upload the files that you have been working on for viewing on the Web.

Hosting is a commodity now, and it is most economically done though an Internet Service Provider that is established to host sites on a large scale. Basically, the ISP will have multiple hosting servers, and will give you a little space on one of them, with your own web address. You will use a file transfer program to contact your ISP's server and upload your files. Once they are on the server in the proper form, your site will be accessible to anyone who has the address.

An ISP can generally host your site under a domain name you register for your own use (for example, ours is "kofc.org"), which gives you greater identity, but adds the extra step of registering a domain name (and paying for it). Or the ISP can give you an address which simply points to a section of its own server, such as "www.myserviceprovider.com/council3962". Either method is perfectly acceptable.

Once you have it working, you can advertise your address to whomever you please. One of the best ways to make your site known to the public is to register it with major Internet search engines such as Yahoo, AltaVista, InfoSeek, etc.
