Thousands Gather for Guadalupe Celebration

Amid mariachi players, Mexican dancers and more than 1,000 pilgrims and onlookers, a unique tilma relic associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe was carried reverently through the streets of New Haven in a Guadalupe Celebration sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The faithful came from all across Connecticut and even from neighboring states on Sept. 9 to take part in the colorful procession, which began at St. Mary’s Church, passed the New Haven Green and City Hall, wound by the Knights of Columbus’ 22-story international headquarters, and finished at the Knights of Columbus Museum. The procession line spread out for two city blocks, as groups carried banners from their parishes, children marched in colorful Mexican garb, and dozens of Fourth Degree Knights in regalia walked in formation. The purpose of the procession was to proclaim the unity of all people of America – North, Central and South – under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe."

Statement by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson On the Meeting Between Pope Benedict XVI and President Barack Obama

The speculation over what the pope and president would discuss, and whether or not abortion would be center stage has been answered affirmatively. As the Vatican’s statement makes clear “the conversation turned first of all” to issues “such as the defense and promotion of life, and the right to abide by one’s conscience." We also know that President Obama told the pope of his desire to "reduce the number of abortions," and of his "respect for the positions of the Church."

New Encyclical Issues Renewed Look at Ethics in Economic and Social Affairs

Pope Benedict XVI issued an encyclical letter July 7 that calls for an ethical, principled approach to economic and social responsibilities. The document, entitled Caritas in Veritate (Love in Truth), addressed not only to Catholics but to "all people of good will," deals with a variety of modern cultural issues. Its underlying message, however, is a renewed exhortation of the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. The Holy Father reminds readers at the outset that love, or charity, "rejoices in the truth" and "is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace."

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson called the death of Father Richard John Neuhaus “a great loss for people of every faith.” Father Neuhaus died on Thursday, Jan. 8, of complications from cancer. A Lutheran minister who converted in 1990 and was ordained a Catholic priest by the late Cardinal John O’Connor, he founded and edited First Things, a “journal of religion, culture and public life,“ even as he served as pastor of a Catholic parish in a poor part of Brooklyn. “Father Neuhaus was a passionate and effective advocate for preserving an honored place for religion in the life of the nation, and one of the most accomplished Catholic intellectuals of our time,” Anderson said.

Supreme Knight's Statement on Death of Cardinal Dulles

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson issued the following statement Dec. 12 upon learning of the death of Cardinal Avery Dulles: "We are saddened to learn of the death of Avery Cardinal Dulles. He was one of the great Catholic theologians of our time, and a man of deep and abiding faith in God. His final days were reminiscent of Pope John Paul II, who named him a Cardinal. While physical infirmities took away his ability to speak and move his arms, his extraordinary mind was as clear and incisive as ever, even as he went to his heavenly reward. In his farewell speech at Fordham earlier this year, he said, ‘If the Lord now calls me to a period of weakness, I know well that his power can be made perfect in infirmity. Blessed be the name of the Lord.’ Blessed be the soul of Avery Dulles. The Knights of Columbus will keep him and his family in our prayers.

In a special letter sent to all state deputies, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson asked that all councils "schedule a rosary at each local parish on Saturday, Nov. 1, to pray for divine guidance as critical choices are made on Election Day and to entrust the outcome to the maternal intercession of our Blessed Mother." He noted that "much is at stake, especially in states where citizens will have a chance to vote to protect marriage (Arizona, California and Florida), to prevent physician assisted suicide (Washington), to protect the unborn (California, Colorado and South Dakota) and to oppose embryonic stem cell research (Michigan)." He added that in addition, "thousands of candidates will be elected to local, state and federal offices, many of whom will have a voice in deciding whether to legally protect life and marriage." He also asked state deputies to remind all Knights to "pray the Novena for Faithful Citizenship encouraged by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops." .

Statement on Financial Services Markets and the Knights of Columbus

The upheaval in the financial markets in recent days has caused a great deal of concern virtually everywhere, among financial services professionals, regulators and consumers alike. Every major financial institution has been affected by the turmoil because of the complexity of our economy, and we are no exception. But I report to you today that there is no reason to be concerned about the value of your Knights of Columbus annuity or life insurance. Because of our very conservative approach to investing our $14 billion in assets, the impact on the Knights of Columbus has not been material, in other words, it has been minimal – far smaller than for many other organizations and the industry as a whole. We have purposefully avoided investing in the highly complex and speculative investments that have brought disaster to some of America’s most well known companies.
