Mother of Mercy Council 4030
Baton Rouge, La.
As part of their “Spiritual Adoption Program,” Mother of Mercy Council 4030 in Baton Rouge, La., and the St. George Church Respect Life Ministry considered a collection to purchase an ultrasound machine for a local pregnancy care center.
When the council’s grand knight received a letter from the Supreme Council office describing the Culture of Life Fund and the Ultrasound Initiative, that cemented their decision to proceed.
As the first step, council members secured the Supreme Council’s approval of the pregnancy care center that would receive the ultrasound machine.
Next, collections were held before and after Masses for three consecutive weekends. These collections netted just over $23,000. As a bonus, the council was put in touch with an anonymous donor who agreed to match the amount they had collected.
So, with the matching funds from the Supreme Council, they were able to purchase an ultrasound machine for Care Pregnancy Clinic, one of the busiest pro-life pregnancy centers in the state, without even touching the $23,000 they had collected at Masses. It was decided to use those funds to secure an ultrasound machine for a second pregnancy care center.
Assisted by volunteers from local middle schools, high schools and colleges, the council conducted a series of car washes that raised more than $28,000.
With the matching funds from the Supreme Council, they purchased a new ultrasound machine for the WNLC Causeway Clinic.
Since then, machines were installed and personnel trained, staff of the centers estimate that approximately one mother per day has chosen life for her baby as a result of seeing the ultrasound image.
