States Dinner Invocation
Cardinal Edward M. Egan
Denver, Colorado, August 2, 2011
Almighty and Eternal Father, we place ourselves in Your presence to ask Your blessing. As members and friends of the Knights of Columbus, we come before You with hearts filled with gratitude. You have blessed us with faith in Jesus Christ, Your Son and our Lord and Savior. You have blessed us with membership in His Holy Catholic Church, led in our day with courage and wisdom by our esteemed Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. You have blessed us with loving families, the essential foundation for any society that is civilized, virtuous, and healthy. You have blessed us with deep commitment to the ideals and works of the Knights of Columbus, led in our day with skill and devotion by our Supreme Knight, Dr. Carl A. Anderson. And You have brought us together to celebrate all of this in this 129th Supreme Convention in friendship and joy.
Moved by this outpouring of goodness, Heavenly Father, we recommit ourselves to all for which the Knights of Columbus stand in the cities, towns, and villages of Poland, the Philippines, and the Americas – both South and North. Thus, we promise to make ourselves instruments of uncompromising justice, charity, and peace in the spirit of the Gospel. We rededicate ourselves to witnessing Jesus Christ to all the world in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. And we pledge ourselves faithfully and vigorously to proclaim all that the Church teaches in the spirit of the “New Evangelization.”
All-loving Father, as You bless us so abundantly, bless as well the food that we are about to receive from Your most gracious bounty. We are the work of Your hands. Give us the strength to live Christ-like lives for Your glory and the salvation of all Your children, so that, in the words of our Holy Father in his Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in America, “the world may know a new hope.”
All of this we humbly beg with unlimited love and total trust.
