Support for National Anthems

Resolution on support for national anthems adopted by the 129th Supreme Convention on Aug. 4, 2011.


129th Supreme Convention

WHEREAS, The Knights of Columbus has always stressed the principle of patriotism in each of the countries where it is organized; and

WHEREAS, The Knights of Columbus recognizes that national anthems evoke feelings of national pride and instill a sense of hope and patriotism in individuals and groups; and

WHEREAS, National anthems frequently remind a nation of the sacrifices made on its behalf and express respect for the history and the struggles that led to the founding of the nation; and

WHEREAS, The principle of solidarity calls us to foster the ties that unite people and social groups together so that we are willing to go beyond our individual interests and give ourselves for the good of our neighbor; and

WHEREAS, National anthems are instrumental in creating strong bonds of unity and cohesion among diverse groups of citizens and people.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Knights of Columbus expresses its unequivocal support for the playing of national anthems at all appropriate public events as a way to encourage greater solidarity among people; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Knights of Columbus strongly encourages the playing of national anthems in a way that demonstrates respect for the anthem itself and the nation and people that it represents; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Knights of Columbus will not waver in its support for the playing of national anthems and will resist all efforts intended to reduce or eliminate the playing of national anthems.
