Fourth Degree Knights stand at attention as the International Eucharistic Congress monstrance is carried onto the Plains of Abraham field in Quebec City to begin the congress’ final day June 22.

Quebec City’s historic Plains of Abraham was the setting for the closing Mass of the 49th International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) June 22.

Thousands of the faithful filled the former battlefield turned national park and cheered the procession of hundreds of priests and members of the hierarchy, and applauded Pope Benedict XVI’s homily delivered live via satellite from the Vatican.  

During the final press conference of congress, Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec thanked the Knights of Columbus for its support. “The Knights of Columbus have been working very hard for more than a year to prepare and support the IEC as volunteers,” Cardinal Ouellet said.

 

Pope Benedict XVI Urges Greater Study of Eucharist
Pope Benedict said he hoped one outcome of the IEC would be that people continue to study the Church’s teaching about the Eucharist as congress participants had done all week. “Commit to study this great mystery,” he said. “Study in groups or individually…so that you can live this mystery more intensely.”

 

Cardinal Ouellet Thanks Knights for Service
During the final press conference of the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) in Quebec City June 21, Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec thanked the Knights of Columbus for its support. “The Knights of Columbus have been working very hard for more than a year to prepare and support the IEC as volunteers,” Cardinal Ouellet said.

 

Eucharistic People Can Transform the World
The link between eucharistic witness and human rights was prominent at the final session of the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) June 21 in Quebec City. The faith Canada’s Native peoples and the people of Africa was celebrated at the day’s Mass and in the catechetical session attended by thousands of congress pilgrims.

  

Congress Reaches Out to Immigrants, Refugees
During a special ceremony June 20, Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec received a  $162,500 donation to his foundation to help with programs in support of refugees and immigrants to Canada. The gift was made on behalf of the International Eucharistic Congress.

 

A New World Is Possible Based on the Eucharist
Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun of Hong Kong told the 49th International Eucharistic Congress that the devastating earthquake in China last month taught his country important lessons. “People discovered that the most precious values are human life, family affection and universal brotherhood,” he said.

 

Congress Pilgrims told to Make Christ’s Life Their  Life’
Christ’s injunction to “let your light shine before all” was taken to heart by an estimated 15,000 International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) pilgrims June 19. Bearing candles, they walked prayerfully through Quebec neighborhoods in a procession whose focus was the Blessed Sacrament.

 

Church Living a ‘Renaissance of Hope’
The need to impart the faith to others, especially young people, was evident throughout the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec. At the congress’ main exhibition hall, members of the Quebec State Council staffed a booth where they promoted a new faith formation program for young people called “Passages.”

Hope in Jesus Christ and in the power of the Eucharist to heal and transform the world were themes addressed by speakers and participants at the 49the International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec City June 18. More than 15,000 people are taking part in the weeklong event.

“It is that faith that brings us to this Eucharistic Congress, that same faith that unites us, and that same faith that sees in the Eucharist the work of our redemption being carried out. Thus, we joyfully proclaim: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.”

Canada’s Salt and Light Television Networkproduced a new documentarythat premiered during the International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec City. Road of Hope: The Spiritual Journey of Cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan was made possible by a special grant from the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council.

 

Cross-Canada Pilgrimage Counted on Knights
Since Pope Benedict XVI blessed the Ark of the New Covenant, symbolof the 49th EucharisticCongress, in Rome in 2006, it has been taken to more than 65 dioceses across Canada, often by Knights of Columbus.

Knights Give $1 Million Grant for Congress
The Knights of Columbus has pledged $1 million for the 49th International Eucharistic Congress to be held in Quebec from June 15-22, 2008, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson announced at a joint news conference with Cardinal Marc Ouellet in Quebec.
