Member engagement begins with communication. A member that doesn’t know what’s going on is going to have a hard time attending programs and events and participating in the work of the council. It’s important to remember that there are many ways to communicate – phone, email, social media, text. Also, don’t forget to use tools like your parish’s bulletin and website (with Father’s permission of course).
One of the best ways to engage council members is to ask their opinion. Good councils regularly ask their members for feedback on council programs, events and initiatives. This is also a good way to ask for new ideas and to find out if a member might want to get more involved.
Another great way to engage members is to recognize life events and milestones. For example, sending a card or email wishing a member “Happy Birthday” or “Happy Anniversary” (for his membership anniversary) is a great engagement strategy. You can similarly recognize the other life events of a member such as graduation, wedding, birth of a child or retirement. You can also recognize the sacramental milestones of a member’s children such a Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation or Marriage.
