    Cardinal Dolan Praises Order’s Ukraine Efforts

    In Our Founder’s Footsteps

    Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly traveled to St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md., April 26, to present the charter to the newly established Blessed Michael McGivney Council 17759, during Solemn Vespers led by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori. Michael McGivney attended the seminary (in its previous location on Paca Street in downtown Baltimore) from 1873-1876 prior to his ordination by Baltimore Archbishop (later Cardinal) James Gibbons in 1877.

    Partnerships and Collaborations

    Pioneered in the 1930s, community blood-drives grew quickly. Local councils often partnered with the American Red Cross or a local hospital. Freeport, N.Y., 1940-1949 approximate.

    Telling Our Story, Spreading the Word

    The Open Door Doctrine was a prize-winning entry in the Knights' Historical Commission's annual contest for a study in American history based on original research. The Commission was established in the 1920s in response to a concern for false historical respresentations.

    Support to the Military

    The Knight have long provided spiritual and substantive support to members of the military.

    Vatican Relations

    “Sunday morning, August 29, we attended a special Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict (XV) in the Vatican Gardens at 7.30 a.m. All the Knights received Communion from His Holiness,” wrote brother Knight Patrick H. Kelly of Philadelphia who summarized the pilgrim-Knights’ experience in the Knights of Columbus Pilgrimage – 1920. The spiritual and patriotic pilgrimage made stops also at sites significant to Catholicism and the European war, in Paris, Reims, Verdun, Lourdes and elsewhere.

    Caring for Refugees

    The Knights' support to refugees started nearly a hundred years ago. In Rochester, N.Y., Knights collected "a mountain of clothing" for Near East -- Armenian Christian -- refugees in 1923.
