Who does this notice apply to?
This notice applies only to residents of Texas or Nebraska whose personal data has been collected by Knights of Columbus. This includes Texas or Nebraska residents who are members or policyholders of Knights of Columbus and visitors to websites maintained by Knights of Columbus.
What categories of your personal data do we process?
Categories of personal data collected from you by the Knights of Columbus may include your name, email address, postal address, phone number, IP address, preferred method of contact, ethnicity, preferred language, religious beliefs, occupation, membership number, council and council number. To issue or service an insurance policy, we may also collect certain information related to your medical history and financial transactions such as policy numbers, account balances, and payment history. Your medical history, ethnicity and religious beliefs are considered sensitive information under Texas and Nebraska law. These sensitive categories are only collected by the Knights of Columbus when you provide them to us by completing an application for insurance or membership.
Why do we process your personal data?
The reasons the Knights of Columbus processes your personal information include:
- providing you products and services you’ve requested,
- marketing our products and services, those of our affiliates, and those of Knights of Columbus Charitable Fund to you,
- keeping you informed of fraternal news via emails, text messages, and newsletters,
- improving our products and services,
- analyzing website usage, and
- processing charitable donations.
How do we share your personal information?
In addition to sharing data with our affiliates and insurance agents, the Knights of Columbus may share some or all of your personal data with certain third parties. All categories of personal data mentioned in the section above may be shared with third parties for the purposes below, though your social security number and personal data related to your medical history or financial transactions will never be shared for marketing purposes. The reasons why your personal data may be shared are set forth below:
- Business Transfers: Should we ever be involved in a merger, acquisition, financing due diligence, reorganization, bankruptcy, receivership, sale of company assets, or transition of service to another provider, your information may be transferred to a successor or affiliate alone or as part of that transaction along with other assets.
- Vendors and Service Providers: We engage third-party vendors and service providers to perform certain functions on our behalf, e.g., in connection with sending marketing emails, text messages, and/or newsletters to you, among other functions.
- Marketing Service Providers: We use certain online tools to target you or individuals with similar interests to use with advertising related to products and services offered by the Knights of Columbus and its partner organizations that may be of interest. Under Texas and Nebraska law, you have the right to opt-out of these forms of targeted advertising. For information on how to opt-out, please review the “How can I exercise my privacy rights?” section below.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose your personal data if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to (i) comply with a legal obligation, (ii) protect and defend the rights or property of Knights of Columbus, (iii) act in urgent circumstances to protect the personal safety of users of the Services or the public, or (iv) protect against legal liability.
How can I exercise my privacy rights?
Texas and Nebraska law provide residents of those states with the following privacy rights under certain conditions:
- The right to confirm whether the Knights of Columbus is processing your personal data and to access the personal data,
- The right to correct inaccuracies in your personal data processed by the Knights of Columbus, taking into account the nature of the personal data and the purposes for which it is processed,
- The right to delete personal data provided or obtained about you by the Knights of Columbus,
- The right to obtain a digital copy of the personal data you provided to the Knights of Columbus in a portable and, to the extent technically feasible, readily usable format that allows the consumer to transmit the data to another controller without hindrance, and
- The right to opt-out of the processing you personal data for the following purposes: o the sale of personal data, o targeted advertising, and o profiling in furtherance a decision that produces a legal or similarly significant effect.
Individuals who desire to opt-out of the forms of targeted advertising referenced in the “How do we share your personal information?” section of this notice should do so by changing their settings via the tools provided by cookies/tracking technologies used by the Knights of Columbus. You can find the links to those technologies below:
- Google AdWords Remarketing Cookie: Our website uses a remarketing advertising service provided by Google, which uses cookies to help us deliver targeted online adverts based on past visits to our website. Google uses this information to display our ads on various third-party websites across the internet. Google AdWords Remarketing allows us to tailor our marketing to better suit your needs and only display ads that are relevant to you. To opt out of Google’s use of AdWords cookies and other Google cookies by visiting Google’s Ads Settings.
- Meta Pixel: Meta Pixel is an analytics tool that allows us to measure the effectiveness of our advertising by understanding the actions you take on our website. In this way, we can tailor our marketing to better suit your needs and only display ads that are relevant to you. If you would like to opt-out of Pixel, go to “Activity Off Meta Technologies” in the Settings section of any of your Facebook or Instagram accounts or by visiting the Facebook Help Center.
- Custom Audiences: We may create Custom Audiences on Meta and LinkedIn in order to better target individuals who may be interested in products and services offered by the Knights of Columbus and our affiliates. If you would like to be opt-ed out of the Knights of Columbus’s use of custom audiences, please email the Knights of Columbus Privacy Office at privacy.officer@kofc.org.
- Marketo: We use third-party marketing software from Marketo, Inc. (“Marketo”) to send our emails. We use Marketo’s cookies as part of tracking so we have information on email open rates and click through rates. We also track activity on the website. When on a page, Marketo’s cookies automatically gather the following information: page visits; link clicks; IP address; referrer, cookie ID. If you prefer that we do not place Marketo’s cookies on your web browser, you may opt out by selecting the Do Not Track (DNT) feature in your web browser.
Except for requests to opt-out of the forms of targeted advertising listed above, individuals requesting to exercise their privacy rights should submit a Privacy Rights Request Form (available in the “Privacy and Usage” section of KofC.org) to the Knights of Columbus Home Office either by postal mail or email. The addresses to which the form should be submitted can be found on the form itself.
These rights are not absolute. A request to exercise these rights must be authenticated before the Knights of Columbus fulfills it. You may need to provide additional information to authenticate a request. Under Texas law, we reserve the right not to fulfill a request that cannot be authenticated using commercially reasonable efforts.
Additionally, there are some circumstances in which the Knights of Columbus may deny an authenticated request to exercise a privacy right. If we do deny your request, you have the right to appeal the denial. You may contact the Knights of Columbus Privacy Office at privacy.officer@kofc.org to begin the appeals process. If, after appeal. If your appeal is denied, you will receive a written explanation of the reason or reasons for the decision.
