Dear Brother Knights:
When I announced the Order’s Building the Domestic Church initiative in 2015, no one imagined that five years later churches coast to coast would be closed, leaving Catholics unable to attend Mass.
The coronavirus pandemic is a crisis of unprecedented proportions. It is also an opportunity for Knights of Columbus to step into the breach and become the spiritual leaders that our families need in this hour, when the only church we can enter is our own domestic church.
The Order offers many wonderful resources through the Building the Domestic Church program. During these days of a Lent like no other, I want to highlight two of them tailor-made for this time.
Our Catholic Information Service (CIS) offers The Way of the Cross: Traditional and Modern Meditations booklet which can be downloaded free of charge. We have also developed a companion for families with young children — a Stations of the Cross coloring book based on mosaics by Father Marko Rupnik, S.J., and the talented artisans of Centro Aletti, a community of artists based in Rome. Their mosaics adorn chapels and churches throughout the world, including the Supreme Council’s Holy Family Chapel and the worship spaces of the Saint John Paul II National Shrine.
This Good Friday, I encourage every Knight with a young family to prepare a Via Crucis in his domestic church. Post the stations throughout your home and invite children to be altar servers, carrying candles or flashlights, as you lead your family in prayer.
These days of challenge require us to be creative and to be faithful. If we are both, I believe this will be the most meaningful Lent of our lives.
Fraternally,
Carl A. Anderson
Supreme Knight
